Today’s Scripture

December 9

Revelation 1:18

Today, many people argue that the return of Christ is a word-picture for something else. For example, they say that it means the growth of the church.

John would not agree. He has used many word-pictures in his book, but by the return of Christ, he means an actual event. It will happen in public, in fact, everyone will see it

Jesus’ return will be like the time when Jesus went up to heaven (Acts 1:9-11). John was a witness of that event. The mention of ‘clouds’ here reminds us of that event. It may also remind us of Paul’s description of Christ’s return in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17. There, Paul emphasises that one reason for Christ’s return is to rescue God’s people from this world.

Here, however, John emphasises another reason: Christ will return in order to change this world. His return will have a powerful effect on people. John refers to the people who ‘pierced’ Christ. That means that they cut through his body with a sharp object. It especially refers to the injuries that he suffered at his death.

John is using words from Zechariah 12:10. That verse is about the Jewish people (that is, the people from the family of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob). At Christ’s return, they will be deeply sad, and that will cause them to return to God. God will accept his Jewish people and he will forgive them (Zechariah 13:1). When the Jewish people return to God, people from every nation will turn to him (Romans 11:12). Christ will return to rule the whole world (Zechariah 14:9): people from every nation will serve him (Zechariah 14:16; Revelation 20:4-6).

Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

Revelation 1-8

Revelation 1-8

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” ~ Revelation 1:8

The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near. ~ Revelation 1:1-3

and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. ~ Revelation 1:5-6
kings and priests. More accurately, “a kingdom and priests.” All who believe live in the sphere of God’s rule, a kingdom entered by faith in Jesus Christ. And as priests, believers have the right to enter God’s presence.  ~ MacArthur Bible Commentary
