Colossians 1:1–2
There are six key reasons to dive into Colossians, and let’s kick it off with the first one. We’re living in a scientific age, and it’s crucial to see how Colossians connects to our modern world. Science is making incredible strides, from breakthroughs in microbiology to exploring the vastness of space. We’re witnessing amazing advancements in areas like nuclear medicine and energy. In fact, the amount of scientific literature being published is staggering—around sixty million pages a year! It’s coming at us so fast that it’s impossible for anyone to keep up with even a single day’s worth of new discoveries. Given that about ninety-five percent of all scientists in history are alive right now, it’s only natural to wonder how God fits into all this. What’s Christ’s role in creation, science, and discovery? Is He part of it or separate from it? Colossians provides some answers, like in Colossians 1:16, which states, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth.”

This is an age of pragmatism. I feel that this is the age when people want to know what works. If you want to sell transcendental meditation, if you want to market yoga, if you want to get people to join in on reflection, then just tell them it will make some difference in their life; just tell them it will help them be a better whatever. This is a practical age, and people are asking basically one question: Does it work? It isn’t so important if it’s true; it’s important if it works. And I think in Christianity people would want to know the same thing – Does Christ work? Does He really change a life? Will I have peace? Does He give joy? Does He really bring happiness? Does He give meaning to life – power, hope, purpose? Colossians answers that. Chapter 1, verse 22, it says that “the body of his flesh through death is able to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight.” He can change you. He can make you holy.
