Clearly, Christians should act wisely and carefully in all their responsibilities in this world. However, they must not neglect their relationship with God in any of these matters. They should live as people who are constantly aware of God and of heaven. In their thoughts and in their words, they must constantly choose to think or to speak what God wants (3:5-8). At home or at work, they must act in the way that God approves of (Colossians 3:18 to 4:1). Their relationship with God must direct all of their relationships with other people, whether they are Christians (3:9-16) or not (4:5-6).

New Testament:
Colossians 3:1-17

Summary: Put On the New Self

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming.
~ Colossians 3:1-6

Christians should think about God and about heaven

Colossians 3:1

God the Father raised Christ from death, but not only from death. He also raised Christ to the highest place in heaven, at his own right side (Philippians 2:8-11; Hebrews 1:3).

Christians are the people who have benefited from Christ’s death. God forgives them because Christ died for them (Romans 5:6-8). However, that must not be the end of their experiences with Christ. Rather, it is only the beginning of their new life with him. Even as God raised Christ, so God has raised them to begin that new life with Christ.

Before they became Christians, their attention was upon the things in this world. They thought much about their ambitions and desires, their emotions and feelings, and their fear, strain and pain. So, it was thoughts about this present world, and their lives in it, that usually filled their minds.

Even after people have become Christians, they often continue to think in the same way. They then believe, of course, that God has provided a wonderful home for them in heaven (John 14:1-6). However, they act, perhaps, as if the things in this world still matter much more to them. Sometimes they even care more about themselves and their present lives, than about their relationship with God.

So Christians must remember that their relationship with God is much more important than anything in this world. Their lives here on earth are short; their future life with Christ will never end (John 11:25-26). They live as strangers in this world (Hebrews 11:13), but they are citizens of heaven (Hebrews 11:16).
